About the Organisation:
Maharshi D.K. Karve founded an institution called "Hingne Stree Shikshan Samastha" in 1896 whose objectives were the uplift, emancipation and education of women, who formed a major section of the socially downtrodden. Prof. Karve dedicated his whole life for the humanitarian cause with great determination and courage of conviction of a visionary. For his sacrifice and dedicated social work for over seven decades and his contribution to the noble cause of re-instating the due status of women, who formed almost half the population of India, the Nation honoured him. On the unique occasion of his own centenary Dr. Karve was awarded "Bharat Ratna" - the Highest National Award, given earlier to only few other Great Men of India - at the hands of the beloved leader and Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. As an expression of gratitude and respect for the pioneering social work done by Annasaheb alias Dhondo Keshav Karve, the General Body of the Institution decided to rename it as "Maharshi Karve Street Shikshan Samstha", in the year 1993.
Our College
With the changing social and economical scenario, the significant role of women in nation building, and the modern trend in the field of Education, the institution found necessary to offer facilities in technical education to the girl students. So it took the first big stride by starting, in 1991, the first Engineering College in India, exclusively for girl students. This was possible only on account of the timely, munificent donation made available to us by the Cummins Diesel (India) Foundation, Pune. As a token of gratitude, the institution decided to name the College of Cummins College of Engineering for Women. The first batch of this Engineering College passed out, as Bachelors of Engineering in July 1995, coinciding with the Centenary of the Institution.
In keeping with the high traditions of upholding social justice, the institution dedicated as a matter of policy, not to demand or accept any "Capitation Fees" as a condition for admission to the college, which practice had in effect prohibited the girls from the financially and socially weaker section of the society, from seeking entry in institutes of higher education. Admissions in our College were and are given strictly on merit and as per norms and rules laid down by "All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)" and the Government.
College Hostel
The activities of the College are housed in a total built-up area of over one lakh forty thousand sq.ft., which accommodates 12 classrooms, 31 laboratories, a workshop and the Hostel. The hostel accommodates 650 girls.
The different laboratories are equipped as per the norms and requirements of the University of Poona. They are being updated periodically.
Faculty
The success records of our students have been consistently high and encouraging. This speaks eloquently of the competence and dedication of our Faculty Members who are well qualified and experienced in their respective fields of teaching. They are selected by competent authorities and are imbibed by a spirit achieving excellence and high proficiency.
